About the museum
The Preskar Museum stands in the heart of the herders' settlement on Velika planina. It is a small grey herder's hut of wood and stone, surrounded by a stone wall; the cross on the roof was once meant to protect the herders from dangers, storms, lightning and evil forces.
The present hut stands on the site of the original one, which was burned shortly before the end of the Second World War. In summer 1945 Andrej Preskar rebuilt it on the ruins, in the same characteristic oval shape it had before the war. This faithfully preserved form, the modest size and the simple interior distinguish it from other herders' dwellings and give it museum value.
The museum is open every day during the grazing season. At 13:00 each day the making of traditional trnič cheese, a speciality of Velika planina, is demonstrated.
