About the museum

The birthplace of Jakob Aljaž stands in Zavrh pod Šmarno goro. Jakob Aljaž (1845–1927) was a priest, composer, publicist and mountaineer, born on 6 July 1845 in Zavrh. He played an important role in the development of Slovenian mountaineering: as a priest in Dovje he bought the Kredarica and the summit of Triglav for one gulden, where he had a modest mountain hut built, known as the Aljažev stolp (Aljaž Tower). He later donated the land to the Slovenian Alpine Society (Slovensko planinsko društvo). He also had other mountain huts built in the Triglav range and marked numerous mountain paths.

He was also interested in music; as a composer he set mainly choral songs with patriotic and mountain themes, among them “Triglav, moj dom” and “Slovan, na dan”, and translated Gruber's “Silent Night” (Sveta noč) into Slovene.

A visit to the birthplace gives school groups an insight into the period of national awakening, the development of mountaineering and the importance of preserving heritage; the programmes also include exploring nature beneath Šmarna gora. Viewing the house and a film about Jakob Aljaž's life is possible by prior arrangement with the public institute Sotočje Medvode.
