About the museum
The museum operates in the Renaissance defence tower Tabor, which was built in the centre of the village of Lokev in 1487. It is a cultural monument of local importance owned by the Municipality of Sežana. In 1830 local residents set up a village school in the tower; later a reading and singing society, the Italian municipal administration and, after the Second World War, the Allied military administration of Zone A were based there.
The museum opened on 14 August 1994. The owner of the collection and manager of the museum is Srečko Rože, who began collecting as a child, inspired by the stories of his grandfather, a survivor of the Austro-Hungarian army, and of his father. The original collection was seized from him in 1983; after completing his military service in 1987 he began building a new one, alongside which he also set up an archaeological and ethnological collection.
The permanent exhibition covers two floors and the attic of the tower. On the first floor the First World War and the Soča Front are presented, the rise of fascism in Primorska, the occupation and the National Liberation Struggle, and the Second World War, with uniforms and equipment of both sides. In the attic are uniforms from 1922 to 1991, with equipment and weapons.
