About the museum
The Museo Aeronáutico Municipal de Los Alcázares stands opposite the main entrance of the air base, on Avenida de la Libertad. It commemorates that Los Alcázares was home to Spain's first military seaplane base, inaugurated in 1915–1916 and of great strategic importance during the Civil War; in 1929 the aviator Ramón Franco took part from there in an unsuccessful attempt to fly to New York.
The building dates from the 1930s, when it was erected as a temporary shelter; it was later converted into a chalet and became church property of an ecclesiastical body of the army. The town council took it back in the 1990s and the museum opened in 1999.
The collection brings together scale models of the aircraft that flew from the base around a hundred years ago, aerial photographs and other images documenting the history of the town and its role in early aviation up to the present day, as well as documents, plans, uniforms, helmets, propellers, weapons, watch posts and anti-aircraft guns.
