About the museum
The museum is in the church of San Francisco Javier, behind the presbytery. The church began as a hermitage in the 17th century, dedicated to the missionary saint whose canonisation in 1622 is the starting point of the present museum, and it became a parish at the end of that century. The museum was founded at the third centenary of the parish, as a tribute to the people who had lived under its protection.
After a long closure, it reopened following a comprehensive renovation of form and content: humidity problems were resolved, a conservation space was created for works not on display, and a rigorous selection of pieces was made. The new historical narrative links the parish with the municipality and relies on audiovisual resources, such as an explanatory video at the start and audiovisual pieces in each room.
The route passes through three small rooms and the camarín (shrine room) of the Saint. Highlights include sacred vestments from the 17th century, small polychrome wooden images, the baptistery with a Macael marble font, a ceremonial vestment set (terno) embroidered in silk and donated by Bishop Trejo, an 18th-century painting from the Hacienda Torre Octavio, and a section devoted to the missionary Antonio García Castejón, with religious pieces from Peru.
