About the museum
The Museum of Tapestries occupies former rooms of the cathedral of the Saviour, known as La Seo, and displays part of the tapestry collection of the Metropolitan Chapter of Zaragoza. The collection took shape from the 16th century with pieces donated by Aragonese nobles and members of the Church, and it was first shown to the public in the 20th century, in an opening that the municipal listing dates to 1929 and 1938.
Tapestries from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries are displayed, mostly of Flemish origin, together with a small selection of goldwork and painting. Notable is the Passion of Christ series, made up of two large tapestries from the early 15th century, among other pieces considered of great value to Spanish heritage.
La Seo is one of the two cathedrals of Zaragoza. It was built on the former Roman forum, the Visigothic church and the city's main mosque, and combines styles from Romanesque to Neoclassical; its Mudéjar wall forms part of the complex declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001.
