About the museum

Beneath the Plaza de la Seo lie the remains of the forum of Caesaraugusta, the Roman colony founded in the Augustan period. On this spot there was first a commercial area with shops, drinking-water pipes and a sewer; in the time of Tiberius the city's great forum was built, with porticoes, annexed premises, a large sewer and channels for rainwater, which drained towards the Ebro.

The excavations made it possible to preserve in situ the layout of the two sewers, the floor levels, the foundations of the porticoes and two stretches of channel. Zaragoza City Council opened the museum in 1995; it was the city's first site museum dedicated to the Roman period. It is part of the Ruta de Caesaraugusta, together with the Puerto Fluvial, Termas Públicas and Teatro museums.

In 2010 the permanent exhibition “Ayer y hoy en el Foro de Caesaraugusta” (Yesterday and today in the Forum of Caesaraugusta) opened, with three models and a virtual reconstruction of the complex. The route includes an audiovisual in which the Ebro tells the story of the site, display cases of everyday objects found in the square, a 26-metre stretch of lead pipes and a visit inside the sewer of Tiberius.

Highlights

  • Sewer from the time of Tiberius, which can be visited from inside
  • 26-metre stretch of lead pipes that supplied a central fountain
  • Models of the porticoes and market from the Augustan period, one of them with sound
  • Audiovisual in which the Ebro narrates the history of the forum
  • Walkway over the remains with a stratigraphic cross-section
