About the museum
The museum occupies the former Almodí, the wheat exchange of Xàtiva, a building completed in 1548 that is the last medieval-style building constructed in the city and the first to use the Renaissance idiom. It keeps its original Gothic façade, with the royal coats of arms of the Crown of Aragon, and a Renaissance courtyard with Ionic columns. It also occupies the neighbouring building, the former Pes Reial, later converted into a customs house for goods and then into the headquarters of the Banco de España.
The archaeological collection began with an 11th-century Islamic basin, which was used as an animal trough until the end of the 18th century. Today the museum is a modern exhibition space that traces the history of Xàtiva from the earliest Palaeolithic remains to the period of al-Andalus.
Among the pieces are reproductions of the remains of the Cova Negra, an Iberian head from the 4th century BC, Roman inscriptions, a reused altar consecrated by a Visigothic bishop, pottery of all periods and, from the Islamic period, arches from a public bath and the arches of the Pinohermoso palace.
