About the museum

The museum’s origins date back to 1966, when the head of the Diputación’s Prehistoric Research Service, Domingo Fletcher, visited Enguera after a necropolis was discovered during the extension of the cemetery. Between 1967 and 1972 the Iberian oppidum of the Cerro de Lucena was partially excavated, and part of the finds were kept in the town hall, the seed of today’s museum. The institution was recognised as a museum in the year 2000.

Its seat is the former Correos y Telégrafos building (post and telegraph office), built in 1929. After years of neglect, the building was rebuilt behind its original façade and converted into a museum in 2007. The museum has three floors, with a laboratory, storeroom and exhibition hall on the ground floor, and a teaching room and a research room on the upper floor.

The collections bring together palaeontological and archaeological material from the sites of the Enguera sierra: remains from the Cretaceous, Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery and, above all, Iberian pieces from the Cerro de Lucena. The municipal art gallery holds works by the Garnelo family and by Fine Arts scholarship holders.
