About the museum

José Segrelles Albert (Albaida, 1885–1969) was one of the great Spanish illustrators of the 20th century. He studied in València and Barcelona, illustrated works by Blasco Ibáñez, Don Quixote, The Thousand and One Nights and The Divine Comedy, worked for The Illustrated London News and spent a period in New York. In 1932 he decided to settle in his native village.

Using the designs he had produced during his stay in America, he began building his house in 1941; it is now the house museum. He lived and painted there until his death on 3 March 1969. The painter designed the house and its decoration, with motifs inspired by Arab art, and it is still preserved as he lived in it.

The house holds the artist's most important anthology, with more than 150 original works showing his career, from family portraits to the posthumous oil “El Pentecostés”. There are also his illustrations for novels by Blasco Ibáñez, for Dante, for passages from Beethoven's symphonies and for stories by Poe, Wells or Cervantes, as well as fantasies on human anatomy and astronomical themes. The spaces include the Sala de Audiciones, the Arco-Rosa, the Sala Árabe and the studio. The artist's library holds around 11,000 works.
