About the museum

Since the early 20th century Mataró has been the Catalan capital of knitwear. Knitted goods manufacturing became one of the pillars of its economy and gave the city a recognised industrial identity within and beyond Catalonia.

The small hall of the former Marfà factory houses the extension of the Museu de Mataró devoted to the heritage of the knitwear industry. Its aim is to become a reference point for preserving and disseminating this industrial culture, and it is open to working with other museums and study and research centres to offer a view of the past, present and future of the sector.

On the first floor, the permanent exhibition shows the processes of creating and manufacturing knitted fabric and the most significant historical moments in the consolidation of this industry, with various machines donated to the city by the Fundació Jaume Vilaseca. The second floor is the reserve area for the museum's textile collections, which serves as a store and technical workspace and can also be visited. Here a selection of garments from 1960 to 1980 is displayed, with an area of mannequins, another of sample books and others for hosiery, underwear, children's wear, swimwear and sportswear, complemented by oral testimonies from the collection's documentary archive.

Can Marfà is part of the Museu de Mataró, whose main seat is at Can Serra and which also has extensions at Ca l'Arenas and at the Torre Llauder archaeological site.
