About the museum

The Museu de Mataró is an institution devoted to safeguarding, studying and promoting the archaeological, natural and movable heritage linked to the city. Its central venue is Can Serra, and it has three annexes: Ca l'Arenas, an art centre; Can Marfà, devoted to knitwear; and the site of Torre Llauder.

Can Serra was the family home of Jeroni Serra Arnau, a nobleman and the first syndic of the city in the Catalan Courts. The Renaissance-style building retains its original structure from 1565, with a wide doorway and a stone staircase leading to the large central hall on the first floor, around which the former bedrooms are arranged. The original wooden coffered ceiling survives in the salon, and the symmetrical façade stands out for its arched doorway with voussoirs and its wrought-iron grilled windows.

The visit is organised around two permanent exhibitions. “Iluro, ciutat romana” (Iluro, Roman town) shows what the city was like in Roman times, with the latest findings from recent excavations; highlights include the funerary stele of Lucius Marcius Optatus, where the name Iluro appears for the first time, a hoard of 19 gold coins and the Venus of Iluro, found in the Roman baths of Can Xammar. “Mataró, ciutat mediterrània” (Mataró, Mediterranean city) traces the history of the city from prehistory and the Middle Ages to the present, with industrialisation, textiles, art and Modernism, and includes the first railway on the peninsula, between Barcelona and Mataró.
