About the museum

The Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología was created by royal decree in 1980 and was founded without its own collection; the first pieces reached its stores in 1982. Its first home was the former Delicias station in Madrid. In 2008 a museum plan was approved that envisaged a decentralised institution with several venues across the country, and management passed to the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).

The A Coruña venue opened in May 2012 under the direction of Ramón Núñez Centella, and two years later it received a special mention at the European Museum of the Year awards. The building houses around 3,000 m² of permanent exhibition across nine floors and seven different museum designs, which can be renewed independently. It is the only State museum of national status with supplementary texts in Spanish, Galician and English, and its route is guided by blue and orange lines on the floor.

In July 2013 the last room of the permanent exhibition opened, devoted to the 20th century, with one hundred objects, one for each year of the century. The museum's total collection is around 19,000 pieces, of which some 600 are displayed in A Coruña.
