About the museum

The Casa Museo de Cervantes is a 16th-century mansion of two storeys with a cobbled courtyard, which keeps the features of the homes of well-off farmers of the period. It belonged to the hidalgo Alonso Quijada de Salazar, whose coat of arms can be seen on the façade, and it is associated with Miguel de Cervantes and Catalina de Palacios, who married in Esquivias on 12 December 1584.

The building was declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico in 1971. In 1990 the Fundación Ramón Areces financed the purchase of the property, restoration works began in 1991, and it was opened as a house museum on 12 December 1994.

The visit goes through the bedrooms of Alonso Quijada and of Cervantes and Catalina, the library, with a window mentioned in Don Quixote, the cellar with large storage jars, the cave or pantry, the kitchens, the sewing room, the stable, the wine press and the courtyards. The display cases show editions of Don Quixote in several languages, the oldest of them English and from the 17th century, and copies of 16th-century parish documents. Theatrical visits are also organised several times a year.
