About the museum
Villaconejos is known for its melons, and the museum aims to tell the story of the people who made this fruit a symbol of the village. It opened in 2003, largely thanks to the involvement of local residents, and presents itself as a unique museum devoted to the melon.
The exhibition follows the production process, from sowing to sale, with more than a thousand photographs, farm tools and memorabilia loaned by melon-growing families. The story begins with the black melon, whose seed is believed to have arrived from North Africa around 1900, and dwells on local varieties such as piel de sapo and mochuelo.
The visit also includes an explanation of the vocabulary of growers and melon enthusiasts, with terms such as “pasao”, “vinao” or “pepino”. Visits are guided and require prior notice.
