About the museum
The Casa de las Doñas is a farmhouse in Enterrías, in the Liébana valley, whose architecture probably dates back to the 17th century. Built with stone and wood from the area, it blends into the landscape around it. It is presented as the first recognised private museum collection in Cantabria and shows the material culture of rural communities through the home of a family of farm owners.
In 1920 doña Mercedes married Domingo Campollo, and the couple lived in the Díez family home. During those years the building was reformed and extended with a tower, a west wing, a well and a wash-house, and the orchard was enclosed. Domingo died in 1926, and his brother-in-law Tomás, secretary of the town council of Vega de Liébana, took over the running of the house. During the Civil War the republican army requisitioned it as a command post, and the family recovered it in September 1937.
After the death of doña Mercedes in 1982 and of Tomás in 1985, the house stood empty for about twenty-five years. A court ruling of 28 December 2009 ended a fifteen-year inheritance case and opened a new stage. The route includes the ground floor with ten rooms, the first floor with six more rooms and attics, and allows visitors to see the pantry, kitchen, bedrooms and studies, with furniture, tools and household objects from the first half of the 20th century.
