About the museum

The Centro de Visitantes de Sotama is the main information point of the Picos de Europa National Park on its Cantabrian side. It stands in the village of Tama, in the municipality of Cillórigo de Liébana, on land ceded by the Government of Cantabria.

The building, of contemporary design, is bioclimatic: it has photovoltaic panels, is surrounded by native trees and was built of stone and wood, the traditional materials of the region. Inside, it combines an information point with an interpretive exhibition that recreates the landscapes, ecosystems and land uses of the territory that once formed Spain’s first national park, the Montaña de Covadonga.

The route covers the geology, flora and fauna, the rivers and the relationship between people and the mountains. It includes re-creations of a gorge, a mine, a Romanesque church, the interior of a traditional house and a staging of the Beato de Liébana. Outside there is a recreation area with an arboretum of native species.
