About the museum
The Museo Cartográfico Juan de la Cosa was founded in 1998 and occupies the first floor of the Casa de Cultura of Potes, a rebuilt building in the historic centre of the town, on Calle del Sol. The Casa de Cultura belongs to the private Fredo Arias de la Canal foundation, which also uses it for exhibitions, lectures, talks and courses.
The route follows the evolution of cartographic art from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. The oldest pieces are shown as facsimiles, while the bulk of the collection consists of original early modern maps, including works by Abraham Ortelius, Willem Blaeu and Lucas Waghenaer.
Original views of cities from the Civitates Orbis Terrarum series by Braun and Hogenberg, published between 1572 and 1618, are also on display, with images of Granada, Cádiz, Burgos and San Sebastián, as well as old plans. The name honours the Cantabrian navigator Juan de la Cosa, author of the famous world map of 1500.
