About the museum
The Casa del Oso en Liébana opened in July 2017 in the Casa del Capitán, a building in the centre of Potes next to the Torre del Infantado. The Fundación Oso Pardo is responsible for the centre.
The exhibition is spread over five rooms with interactive elements. It tells how relations between people and bears have developed from prehistoric and medieval times, when hunting was restricted to the nobility, up to today; it explains the biology of the bear and the challenges to its conservation; and it dedicates a space to the bear carnivals that are still held in villages of the Cantabrian mountains.
Among the attractions are a replica bear den in which visitors can experience hibernation, and several videos with images of Cantabrian bears in the wild, recorded by the foundation's field teams. The materials are in Spanish and English, and there is a children's trail in comic-strip format.
