About the museum

The Rural School Museum is housed in the former schools of Mogrovejo, a village in the municipality of Camaleño, in the Liébana valley, at the foot of the Picos de Europa. Mogrovejo is declared a Historic-Artistic Ensemble and is noted for its traditional architecture and for the tower of the lords of Mogrovejo, dating from the late 13th century, which is privately owned.

The museum aims to rescue from oblivion the school life of earlier generations and to recognise the importance of rural schools in Liébana, especially the single-teacher schools (escuelas unitarias), where a lack of resources was offset by the dedication of teachers and pupils. It receives municipal funding.

The visit includes a reception room with audiovisual material and a permanent exhibition that recreates a traditional classroom with wooden desks, old textbooks, maps, a blackboard and other school objects of the period. Explanatory panels cover subjects, primary schools, teachers, charitable educational foundations and pupils from different eras.
