About the museum
The Museo de la Apicultura is in the former rural school of Tanes, in the municipality of Caso, beside the church of Santa María la Real de Tanes, a typical Asturian rural church whose construction began in the 16th century on the site of a medieval church, and whose porch opens onto the Tanes reservoir. Together with the Museo de la Madera, it forms the group of ethnographic museums of Caso, a municipality that covers a large part of the Redes Natural Park and where traditional ways of life are still very present.
Honey and wax were basic products for rural communities: honey as a natural sweetener and wax as a raw material, above all for candles and church candles (cirios). The exhibition explains the life cycle of bees and their importance for the natural balance, the basics of the beekeeper’s work and the uses of the products obtained.
The route shows the development of hives, their preparation and care, honey extraction and a collection of beekeepers’ tools, utensils and clothing. The visit is also designed for families, with a documentary made for children and a bee as a mascot.
