About the museum
The Museo de la Madera, known as MUMA, occupies a 16th-century rural palace in the village of Veneros, in the municipality of Caso, in central Asturias. It shows the traditional rural life of the area and woodworking, above all the work of the madreñeros casinos, who made madreñas, the wooden clogs typical of the region.
The collection brings together local madreñas and examples from other areas of northern Spain and Europe with a damp climate, as well as farm implements, carts and transport equipment, baskets, musical instruments, furniture and household items from the farmhouse. The ensemble also includes hórreos (raised granaries) and outbuildings such as hayloft and cowsheds. The village of Veneros itself is worth a stroll, with its chapel and several hórreos dating back to the 16th century, which are among the oldest in Asturias.
