About the museum
The house is located in Cervatos de la Cueza, in the Palencia comarca of Tierra de Campos, and is where Juan de San Martín Gómez, father of the liberator José de San Martín, was born in 1728. It is an example of local vernacular architecture, built in adobe, rammed earth and timber framing using traditional techniques, with curved clay tile roofing and an inverted U-shaped floor plan. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2000 and opened as a museum in 2018.
The house follows the model of Tierra de Campos farmhouses, with a living area and an area for animals. The stable where the draught animals were kept and the farm tools survive, along with the oven kitchen, the bedrooms and the sobrado (the loft where grain was stored). The main room functions as a hall of honour, housing mementoes and testimonies of the friendship with the Argentine Republic, a bond also reflected in the Plaza de la República Argentina and in the village's church in colonial style.
