About the museum

The Casa del Poeta was the home of José Ángel Valente (Orense, 1929 – Geneva, 2000), poet, novelist and essayist, one of the most outstanding Spanish intellectuals of the second half of the 20th century. After living in Madrid, Paris, Oxford and Geneva, Valente chose Almería as his place of residence for the last fifteen years of his life, drawn by what he called “the call of the light”.

The restoration of the house, by the architect Ramón de Torres, inspired texts by the poet himself, such as “Perspectivas de la ciudad celeste”, in which he reflects on the symbolic value of the architecture of the house and of its route from the basement to the roof terrace. From the time he settled in the city, Valente took part in cultural and social projects, defended the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park and collaborated with local photographers.

Today the house, which is municipally owned, offers through its themed spaces a route through Valente's life and poetics, the mutual influence between the poet and Almería, and his relationship with other arts.
