About the museum

The site is in the Nicolás Salmerón park and preserves the only Roman remains in the city of Almería that have survived to the present: a fish-salting factory that operated between the 1st and 4th centuries AD.

The complex also includes a stretch of the city's Islamic walls, built in the mid-10th century, with the remains of one of its gates, which gives the place its name.

It was the first urban excavation carried out in Almería, and the public debate about its preservation accompanied the discovery. Today it functions as an interpretation centre with three rooms: a short audiovisual on how an archaeological site forms and is excavated, a room with six Roman salting tanks, and a central room with the remains of the medieval wall and its gate.
