About the museum

The Museo de la Guitarra Española “Antonio de Torres” opened on 20 December 2013 in the building that had housed the Museo de la Ciudad, behind Almería Cathedral. It was promoted by the town council's Culture Department as an exhibition and information centre that explains the key aspects of the guitar in an engaging way and pays tribute to the Almería-born luthier Antonio de Torres, regarded as the father of the modern guitar. At the opening, figurines bearing the silhouette of a guitar designed by Torres were presented to guitarists, musicians and personalities linked to the project.

The three-storey building houses exhibition rooms, a multipurpose room, an auditorium for around 150 people and common areas. The permanent exhibition is organised by theme: the guitar through art, the history of the instrument, Torres's workshop and the birth of the modern guitar, Almería in his day, the Torres guitars around the world, a world of guitars, the gallery of guitarists, a didactic room, an interactive room and a listening room.

In late October 2017 the museum's School of Luthiery was launched, a pioneering project in Spain for teaching people how to build musical instruments.
