About the museum

The Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía was set up in 1992 to hold the photographic holdings of the Imagina project and has since established itself as a leading centre for the research, conservation and dissemination of Andalusian photographic heritage. In 1996 it came under the Directorate General of Historic Heritage Institutions; today it is attached to the Regional Department of Culture and Sport of the Junta de Andalucía, and the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions manages its programme.

In October 2007 it opened its current premises in the former Liceo of Almería, a building in the historic centre rehabilitated for this purpose. It has around 600 m² of exhibition rooms, workshop classrooms, a digitisation room, a photographic studio, a library, a projection room, an archive and a sales point for photography books. In the square in front of the building stands a monument to the Almería photographer Manuel Falces.

The centre approaches photography from an interdisciplinary perspective through exhibitions, workshops, publications, training activities and its own productions, with particular attention to authors born in or linked to Andalusia. Its programme is temporary and changes several times a year.
