About the museum
The Museo del Realismo Español Contemporáneo (MUREC) opened its doors on 15 March 2024. The project grew out of a collaboration, since 2012, between the Diputación de Almería (provincial council) and the Fundación de Arte Ibáñez Cosentino, and out of the friendship between the realist artists Antonio López García and Andrés García Ibáñez.
It is housed in the former Hospital de Santa María Magdalena, a building declared a Property of Cultural Interest and the only 16th-century civil building that survives in the provincial capital. In 2017 the Diputación, the owner of the building, began a thorough renovation that reinforced its structure and enhanced its Renaissance north façade, the Mudéjar coffered ceiling and the Villalán staircase. The building covers more than three thousand square metres, with two floors and several galleries around a central courtyard, as well as a didactic room and a multipurpose hall in the former chapel.
The permanent collection brings together 271 works created between 1890 and 2023 by 134 Spanish artists, assembled by the Fundación de Arte Ibáñez Cosentino expressly for this public museum. It is arranged chronologically in 11 rooms: the ground floor covers the late 19th century to the early 1950s, and the first floor runs from the 1950s to the present day.
