About the museum
Álvaro Cunqueiro was born in Mondoñedo and returned to the town in 1947, after working as a journalist in Madrid. His family moved into this building on the Praza da Catedral after the death of his father, and around 1949 it became his permanent home. He lived there for some thirty years and wrote much of his most influential work there, including Merlín e familia (1955).
The house later became a museum in his honour. The ground floor houses the reception, a tourist information point and the Taberna de Galiana, with objects, writings and photographs by the author. The first floor includes a sensory room with an audiovisual presentation on his life and work, especially Merlín e familia i outras historias. The second floor is devoted to his books, his relations with other authors, and his poetry and theatre, and the third offers a more personal part, with a reconstruction of his reading room and his bedroom.
