About the museum
The Museo de la Cuchillería de Taramundi is in the hamlet of Pardiñas, about three kilometres from the village of Taramundi. It opened in 2007 on the initiative of the craftsman Juan Carlos Quintana, of the seventh generation of a family of blacksmiths and knife makers. It is run by the company Navallas de Taramundi, S.L.L., with the aim of preserving and passing on the legacy of a trade that has shaped the history of the municipality.
In 2018, to mark its tenth anniversary, the museum reopened with a renewed display and image, and today the whole hamlet of Pardiñas forms part of the exhibition space. The visit includes an audiovisual on the origin and development of knife-making in Taramundi, a room of mechanisms and machinery where tools can be handled, a video model of the municipality's geography, a reconstruction of a knife maker's home and two rooms with one of the most important knife collections in Spain.
Outside are the water-powered mechanism, the traditional forge where live demonstrations are given, and the giant knife, built from 2011 with the help of several craftsmen, which measures 7.20 metres. A glazed workshop lets visitors watch the current production of knives and blades by the C. Quintana brand.
