About the museum
The history of the museum begins at the end of the 19th century, when Manuel López-Cancelos López, who had emigrated to Argentina, returned with his savings and decided to build a custom grain mill (molino de maquila) at Mazonovo. The site was a crossroads of paths to the nearby villages and lay about 400 metres from Taramundi. He bought the land on the left bank of the river on 25 March 1899. In 1921 a new pair of millstones was installed, and in 1929 a dynamo driven by a horizontal water wheel (rodezno), which electrified Taramundi, Vega de Llán and Nogueira.
After the civil war a new building was erected on the right bank, with a water channel (acueducto) and a Francis turbine that drove three pairs of millstones, along with a new power station. The mills stopped working in the early 1990s (20th century), and the power station stopped supplying the village in 1982. With the refurbishment of the building undertaken in 1997 by the founder's grandchildren, the museum opened to the public on 1 July 1998. The family, now in its fourth generation of millers, continues to develop the project.
The visit begins with an introductory audiovisual and goes through the complex's buildings, the outdoor walk beside the canal with percussion mills, the water channel and the forebay where the turbine sits.
