About the museum
Camilo José Cela was born in Iria Flavia on 11 May 1916 and died in Madrid on 17 January 2002. He published La familia de Pascual Duarte in 1942 and wrote some 120 books in very varied genres. He received the Premio Nacional de Narrativa (1984), the Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras (1987), the Nobel Prize in Literature (1989) and the Premio Cervantes (1995).
The museum is the house museum of the Fundación Pública Gallega Camilo José Cela, which bears the writer's name following the donation of his heritage in 1990. It is in the Casas dos Cóengos, opposite the collegiate church of Santa María de Adina, in Iria Flavia.
Its main holdings are the author's manuscripts, together with a large collection of letters, a library with editions of his books and studies of his work, his personal library, a press archive with references from 1942, and the complete collection of his literary magazine Papeles de Son Armadans. An art gallery brings together paintings by Picasso and Miró, and other collections show the writer's personal and cultural background.
