About the museum

The house at A Matanza, in Padrón, was left empty after the death of Rosalía de Castro in 1885 and passed through several owners. In 1946 Xosé Villar Granjel and Xosé Mosquera bought it, and in the autumn of 1947 the Patronato Rosalía de Castro was set up to restore it. A first restoration, according to plans by Gómez Román, was carried out in 1951.

The house was restored again in 1971, under the presidency of Sixto Seco and the direction of Fernández-Albalat, and was opened to the public as a house museum on 15 July that year. Further improvement works followed, and a general refurbishment in 1977. The Foundation gradually expanded the complex: in 1975 it added the gatekeeper's house, a meeting room and an archive; in 1985 an auditorium was inaugurated; and in 1999 the Centro de Estudos Rosalianos was opened. The Fundación Rosalía de Castro continues the work of the Patronato and is the current owner.

The permanent exhibition was renewed with a museological and museographic project of 2017 designed by Pepe Barro. It combines furniture, artistic objects, documents and singular pieces with technological and audiovisual resources to explain Rosalía's life, work and family; on the second floor there is a space dedicated to Manuel Murguía.

The complex includes a garden of botanical and cultural value, which is visited with an audio guide or with a guide.
