About the museum
The house where the poet Manuel María was born, in the centre of Outeiro de Rei, was built with slate and stone by his grandparents and is known as the Casa das Hortas. After its restoration it opened as a house museum on 7 September 2013, and it is the seat of the Fundación Manuel María de Estudos Galegos, which manages the writer's legacy.
The building was renovated as a prototype of the chairega house of the plain of Lugo (A Chaira), removing later additions. The rooms are furnished with the poet's personal objects, and the visit, which is always guided, can be completed with audiovisual, musical and technological resources or with a route through places linked to his life and work.
The museum holds the writer's library, considered one of the best private collections of books in or about Galician from the postwar period to today, as well as manuscripts by figures such as Otero Pedrayo, Celso Emilio Ferreiro, Ramón Piñeiro and Francisco Fernández del Riego. The art collection includes works by Castelao, Urbano Lugrís, Carlos Maside, Laxeiro and Luís Seoane. The Foundation also has an auditorium for around 100 people in the centre of the town, where it organises its own activities and hosts events by other bodies.
