About the museum
The collection of musical instruments and sound objects is part of the Centro de Artesanía e Deseño (CENTRAD) of the Diputación de Lugo (provincial council). It brings together holdings from the former music section of the Museo Provincial de Lugo, pieces produced in-house as a result of research projects, and acquisitions, donations and deposits from private individuals. The documentary and bibliographic holdings gathered over the years complete the collection. The Xunta de Galicia has recognised it as a visitable collection specialising in music since 2008.
It includes instruments from Galician musical heritage and examples from other cultures, mechanical instruments, sound objects and toys, traditional costume and stone replicas of musical iconography. According to the collection itself, it is the most important set in Europe of medieval stringed instruments from the 12th and 13th centuries.
The route comprises four permanent rooms and the musical instrument workshop, which is integrated into the building. Sala Antón de Marcos recreates the historic workshop founded in 1951 with the tools of Paulino Pérez. Sala Pórtico de la Gloria shows replicas of the instruments on the portal of Santiago cathedral, replicas of instruments from manuscripts by Leonardo da Vinci, and an important collection of hurdy-gurdies (zanfonas). Sala Xelmírez brings together replicas of the instruments on the corbels of the Xelmírez palace, a tactile station, sound toys and jew’s harps. Sala Faustino Santalices y Paulino Pérez holds instruments of traditional Galician music and a section of mechanical and stringed instruments from different parts of the world.
