About the museum

The Diputación Provincial de Lugo (Provincial Council of Lugo) created the Museo Provincial in 1932 to gather and protect the cultural heritage of the province. It opened to the public for the first time in 1934, on the ground floor of the Pazo de San Marcos.

By the mid-20th century, when the collections no longer fitted in its first home, it moved to the former San Francisco convent, on the Praza da Soidade, which was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1962. The convent cloister, dating from the 15th century, has inscriptions on its arches with the year 1452, and the kitchen and refectory date from the 18th century.

The museum now has 29 display rooms housing very varied collections, organised into three main sections: archaeology, ethnography and fine arts. It belongs to the Rede Museística Provincial de Lugo, which coordinates the four museums run by the Diputación.
