About the museum
The Museo Interactivo da Historia de Lugo, known as MIHL, opened on 29 November 2012, a date commemorating the declaration of the Roman wall of Lugo as a World Heritage Site. It was designed by the studio Nieto Sobejano, which conceived it as a museum-park or park-museum in which architecture and landscape merge.
The design is geometric and has the circle as its organising element, with which it links to the Roman wall, the stone ring that surrounds the city. It combines Corten steel, whose brown colour connects with the earth under which the building was constructed, and a green roof that brings the greenery of the Galician landscape. Beneath the building there are several springs whose flow requires drainage pumps to run 24 hours a day, which posed an architectural challenge. The project received a special mention at the Architizer A+ Awards in 2013.
The museum houses a permanent exhibition that reviews the city's historical evolution through audiovisual resources, interactive models and information panels. It includes a small selection of archaeological pieces, among which stands out the granite monolith with the city's founding inscription, commissioned by Paulo Fabio Máximo in honour of the emperor Augustus, as well as a terracotta theatre mask and epigraphic and ceramic pieces. It also offers a broad programme of temporary exhibitions and cultural and educational activities.
