About the museum
The Casa-Museo Don Pepe Marsilla is a former manor house on Calle Rosario, behind the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario. It shows how people lived in Bullas at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Its host is José Marsilla Melgares, “Don Pepe”, a landowner who was mayor of Bullas twice and who in 1900 launched the renovation that gave the house its present appearance.
The house is divided into the residential area, with library, sitting room, dining room and bedrooms in Modernista decor, and the working area, which reflects the economic activity of Don Pepe’s estates. The cellar stands out, with 57 tinajas and a capacity of more than 140,000 litres, divided between wine for sale and wine reserved for the family’s own consumption. A later museum extension added Don Pepe’s alcove, a period toilet and rooms devoted to traditional trades. The house also contains an archaeology room with finds from the Bullas excavation sites, especially the Roman villa of Los Cantos.
