About the museum
The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Cehegín occupies three buildings around the Plaza del Castillo, two of them historic. One is the former town hall, the Palacio de los Fajardo, inaugurated in 1676, whose main façade and rooms were built in 1745 over those of the medieval castle of the 12th century; another is an 18th-century noble house on Calle Mayor. Together the three buildings cover more than 2,800 square metres.
The museum opened in 1997 and the buildings were refurbished in 2004. It now offers twelve exhibition rooms, as well as a library and an information room. The route is chronological: Neolithic remains with pottery and flint arrowheads, a fossil collection added in 2012, Bronze Age tools and vessels linked to the Argaric culture, Iberian pieces, Roman inscriptions and sarcophagi, Visigothic material from Begastri and finds from the crypts of the church of Santa María Magdalena.
