About the museum
The Casa Museo María Antonia Dans occupies the house in Curtis where the Galician painter María Antonia Dans (1922–1988), a leading figure of neo-expressionism in Galicia, grew up. Her father had bought the house in the 1920s, when the family moved from Oza de los Ríos to this municipality in the Mariñas Coruñesas.
The Concello de Curtis and the Xunta de Galicia renovated the house and the former studio with an investment of €250,000, of which the Xunta contributed around 56%. The buildings were recovered in their original appearance, and new volumes were added for artistic activities. The museum opened its doors in March 2024 and is the first house in Galicia dedicated to a woman painter.
On the ground floor the dining room and kitchen are preserved with period furniture, and on the upper floor is the gallery, supported by cast-iron columns, where the artist worked and which now displays a selection of her paintings. Outside, her daughter's studio can be seen, belonging to the artist Rosalía Dans. The centre also has a space for temporary exhibitions and forms part of the network of interpretation centres of the Mariñas Coruñesas Biosphere Reserve.
