About the museum

In 1998 the remains of a Roman villa appeared in the centre of Cambre. A year later the site was excavated, and in 2001 work began to turn it into a museum, so the museum now stands on the archaeological remains themselves.

The villa, from the Late Empire, was an agricultural estate of which the private baths survive. Two rooms remain: the frigidarium (cold bath) and the latrines. The most valuable element is the wall paintings, of exceptional technique and quality, with fish, octopuses, scallops and other marine motifs, which formed a setting in which leisure was combined with hygiene and care of the body.

The museum is organised in two spaces: one with explanatory panels and display cases of pottery and painted fragments found in the excavations, and another with the architectural remains of the villa, accompanied by models that reconstruct its original structure to scale. It is part of the Network of Interpretation Centres of the Mariñas Coruñesas y Terras do Mandeo Biosphere Reserve, and each year the Romaría Castrexo-Romana Galaicoi stages in the municipality the struggle between the Castrexos and the Romans.
