About the museum

The Centro Arqueolóxico do Barbanza was promoted by the Galician Archaeological Heritage Network, created in 2001 by the archaeology department of the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage of the Xunta. It opened at the end of 2002 on the Neixón headland, in Cespón, and its management and funding are today the responsibility of the culture department of the Concello de Boiro. The archaeological collection has been open to visitors since 5 December 2012.

The three-storey building occupies an isthmus beside the Neixón hillforts, two fortified Iron Age settlements, the large one and the small one, declared Assets of Cultural Interest in 2011. Excavations carried out between 2003 and 2007 provided much of the material on display.

The exhibition shows the variety of cultural manifestations of recent prehistory on the Barbanza peninsula, with megalithism, rock art and castro culture (Iron Age hillfort culture), as well as the finds from Neixón, replicas of petroglyphs and the main prehistoric remains, and the reconstruction of a castro dwelling. The centre also organises talks, screenings and archaeological, historical, environmental and ethnographic routes.
