About the museum
The museum's origins lie in the Museu de la Ciutat, which opened in 1931 with collections of palaeontology, archaeology, textiles and fine arts, born of the need to house the holdings gathered at the beginning of the 20th century, among them the finds from La Salut. In 1970 it was formally constituted as a history museum.
Its seat is the Casal Antoni Casanovas, a three-section mansion with a ground floor and two upper floors, built in 1859 for the manufacturer Antoni Casanovas. It has a neoclassical façade with stone details and iron railings. Before becoming a museum it housed a court of first instance (from 1883), the Caixa d'Estalvis savings bank (1889–1916) and an industrial school (1902–1911); since 1931 it has been the museum's home.
The holdings cover archaeology, history and ethnology, with a notable collection on the local woollen textile industry. Among the known pieces is the variscite necklace from the Bòbila Padró site. The permanent exhibition traces the history of the Vallès from the first settlers to present-day Sabadell and includes a reproduction of a prehistoric hut.
The museum also manages other heritage sites in the city, such as Casa Duran, on Carrer del Pedregar, 7.
