About the museum

The Museu de Terrassa is made up of spaces, elements and collections of Terrassa's cultural heritage. Its main site is the Castell Cartoixa de Vallparadís, a 12th-century fortified building that became a Carthusian monastery in the 14th and 15th centuries, when the chapter house, the two-storey cloister and the chapel were built. It was restored in the 1950s and adapted for museum use in 1959. The permanent exhibition, opened in 1994, is housed here and shows the evolution of the territory and human occupation of Terrassa and its region, from its origins to today.

Among the most notable pieces are the Roman lead sarcophagus from Ca n'Anglada, the Romanesque carving of the Mare de Déu de Sant Cugat from the early 13th century, part of the cloister gallery of the Castell Palau de Terrassa, the Baroque carvings of the high altarpiece of Sant Pere, the popular whistle from the l'Anònima textile factory and the banner of the Escola Coral de Terrassa. The Tinellet room hosts the temporary exhibitions.

Other sections of the museum are the Seu d'Ègara, with the Romanesque churches of Sant Pere and Santa Maria and a collection of 15th-century Gothic altarpieces; the Casa Alegre de Sagrera, an eclectic-style middle-class house with paintings by Alexandre de Riquer and collections such as the Salvans collection of Eastern art and the painting of Martínez Lozano; the Torre del Palau and the Medieval Town Interpretation Centre; and the cloister of the convent of Sant Francesc. In 2026 the Masia Freixa, a Modernista work by Lluís Muncunill, was added.

The holdings exceed 26,000 documented objects, with notable collections of art, archaeology and decorative arts.
