About the museum

The Museo Casa Natal Picasso occupies the house on the Plaza de la Merced where Pablo Picasso was born on 25 October 1881. The building was erected in 1861 to a design by Diego Clavero and, between 1870 and 1872, became one of the so-called Casas de Campos, when the architect Gerónimo Cuervo altered its façade. The family lived there until 1891, when they moved to La Coruña and later to Barcelona. In 1983 the building was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument of National Interest.

The museum grew out of the Fundación Pablo Ruiz Picasso, created by agreement of Málaga City Council on 26 February 1988. At first it occupied only the first floor; after a complete refurbishment, the Spanish monarchs inaugurated the reformed museum on 22 June 1998. Since 2014 it has operated as a public agency, which also manages the Centre Pompidou Málaga, the Colección del Museo Ruso, the MUCAC and the MEET.

The route is thematic and emphasises the artist's connection with Málaga: his training in his father's studio, the family, the recreated salon of the house and objects from his childhood, as well as graphic works and ceramics. The museum's holdings exceed 6,900 works and include 84 preparatory sketches for Las señoritas de Aviñón and a large collection of prints.
