About the museum

The Museo Picasso Málaga opened its doors on 27 October 2003 in the Buenavista Palace, in the historic centre of the artist’s birthplace. It grew out of donations of works by Christine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, daughter-in-law and grandson of Pablo Picasso, and from the determination of the Junta de Andalucía, which had bought the palace in 1997 for this purpose. Until then the building had housed the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts, between 1961 and 1997.

The Buenavista Palace is a 16th-century building with Renaissance and Mudéjar features, raised by Diego de Cazalla on the remains of a Nasrid palace. The rehabilitation and extension were the work of the American architect Richard Gluckman, together with Isabel Cámara and Rafael Martín Delgado, and in 2006 the project received an honour award from the American Institute of Architects. In the basement, Phoenician and Roman remains are preserved, such as a stretch of Phoenician city wall from the early 6th century BC and a Roman salting factory.

The collection brings together works by Picasso from different periods, from the donations of the Ruiz-Picasso family. In 2017 its display was reorganised with new lighting and newly acquired works. The museum is run by the Fundación Museo Picasso Málaga and complements the collection with temporary exhibitions, educational activities and a programme of music and lectures.
