About the museum
The Roman theatre of Málaga was built at the beginning of the 1st century AD, partly over some Republican baths that were moved to a nearby plot. It was in use for about two centuries and was definitively abandoned in the 3rd century AD, after the building had been plundered and filled in. Salting works were later set up on the site, where garum was possibly produced, and from the 5th century AD the space was used as a necropolis.
The theatre lay hidden beneath the houses on the slope of the Alcazaba. In 1940 the Casa de la Cultura was built on top of it, and in 1951 landscaping works brought the structure to light. After decades of excavations and debate, the Casa de la Cultura was demolished, the whole plot was excavated and the site was enhanced.
Today the archaeological site consists of the excavated remains and an interpretation centre. Visitors can see the cavea or seating, the orchestra with marble slabs, the scaena with a reproduced wooden floor and fragments of the stage façade, as well as a 3rd-century AD salting tank beneath the glass pyramid on calle Alcazabilla and the opus spicatum paving of the earlier Republican baths.
