About the museum

The Museo de Arte Flamenco belongs to the Peña Flamenca Juan Breva, a non-profit cultural association of public utility founded in Málaga on 2 October 1958 and regarded as the oldest flamenco peña in Spain. From 1960 the association began gathering records and pieces for a future museum, which opened its doors in 1973.

The peña moved its headquarters several times: from the Callejón del Picador to El Chinitas in 1998, to the Peña Trinitaria in 2004, and in 2008, to mark its 50th anniversary, to its current premises on calle Ramón Franquelo, a building ceded by the Instituto Municipal de la Vivienda of the Ayuntamiento de Málaga, with some 800 m² spread over five floors.

The museum occupies the first and second floors. It holds more than 5,000 pieces: works of art acquired or donated by members and friends, such as Manila shawls, trained dresses (batas de cola), paintings and sculptures; a collection of more than twenty guitars, including one of Juan Breva’s, made by the guitar maker Soto y Solares of Seville; more than 2,500 items of phonographic holdings, with slate and vinyl records, wax cylinders, tapes and CDs; and an important bibliographic collection. On the staircase there are posters on the history of flamenco in Málaga, the café cantantes and guitar makers, and the ground floor hosts a tribute exhibition to Juan Breva.
