About the museum

The Espai Carmen Thyssen opened in summer 2012 with the exhibition “Paisatges de llum, paisatge de somni. De Gauguin a Delvaux”. It was created as a provisional solution while the project for a large centre of Catalan painting in the former cork factory of Can Serra, next to the monastery, was delayed.

The space occupies the Palau de l’Abat, within the Benedictine monastery of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, and combines painting with the historical and architectural setting of the building. Each summer it presents a main show of national and international painting from the Carmen Thyssen Collection, with further exhibitions at other times of the year and in the monastery gardens.

The centre is part of a cultural triangle on the Costa Brava together with Girona and Figueres, and maintains links with the Museu Carmen Thyssen Andorra, the Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. It has a mediation space for children, the Espai Kids, and offers general and family guided visits.
