About the museum
The Centre d'Interpretació Soldats a les Trinxeres, in Vilalba dels Arcs, is part of the network of Battle of the Ebro sites run by COMEBE. The Battle of the Ebro was the hardest military engagement of the Spanish Civil War, and the key to the Republican defensive system was the excavation of an extensive network of underground trenches at the most strategic points. That system shaped the daily life of the combatants.
The exhibition shows the experiences, activities and emotions that soldiers lived through every day on the battlefield, and is divided into the two faces of the combatant. The section “Ser soldado” (Being a Soldier) explains the day-to-day of combat, the construction of the trenches and of the offensive and defensive network, and stresses the importance of vigilance and waiting, since hours or days could pass in the trenches between one battle and the next.
The section “Ser persona” (Being a Person) recounts the life of the soldiers during the truces: personal hygiene, how they slept, ate and drank, the habit of smoking, religious practice and writing, which was essential for keeping in touch with loved ones. The aim of the centre is to give visitors the knowledge to understand the historical spaces of the battle and to show how these experiences marked a whole generation of survivors.
